I know you may be wondering why you’d go to the work of making your own seasoning blend, but hear me out on this one! Making your own seasoning blends, such as this Homemade Poultry Seasoning, is simple to do and then you know exactly what’s in the mix.
Before I go any further, I want to start by saying there are many great seasoning blends on the market, and they aren’t all unhealthy.
So, why do I make my own seasoning blends, and why should you consider doing it too?
Why make homemade seasoning blends?
REASON #1
The main reason I make my own seasoning blends is because I already have the base herbs and spices in my kitchen. I LOVE to cook (hence the food blog!), so my spice cabinet is no joke.
If you’re anything like me, then you know that you already have plenty of single ingredient herbs and spices in your kitchen too.
So, why not take 5 minutes to mix up a seasoning blend with herbs and spices you already have rather than trucking to the store to buy a premade seasoning blend?
See my point?
In the long run, I feel like I waste less this way and, while I love to cook and feel it’s important to use the right ingredients for whatever I’m making, I’m also a bit of a minimalist with my pantry ingredients.
I don’t want to have partially used containers of food or ingredients (such as random purchased seasoning blends) just sitting around. It just creates clutter and potential waste that I don’t want.

REASON #2
The second, and most important, reason why I think it’s best to make your own seasoning blends is so that you know EXACTLY what you’re putting into the blend.
Purchased seasoning blends often contain unnecessary sugar, WAY more salt than needed or MSG (monosodium glutamate).
While it may not seem like a big deal to eat a little extra sugar, or salt or MSG every once in a while, the amount you eat over time can really add up and wreak havoc on your health when you’re relying on a lot of purchased seasoning blends for cooking.
Besides trying to avoid excess sugar, salt and MSG, purchased seasoning blends often contain preservatives or other additives that may be wheat or dairy based.
If you’re avoid gluten and dairy, then making your own seasoning blends is definitely the way to go!
